10 Reasons Why You Should Have a Winter Wedding

You’re probably thinking get out, it’ll be cold and miserable here in Victoria in the middle of Winter, what if it freaking rains the whole time?

I get it but hear me out, I’ve got 10 of the best reasons to have a dreamy celebration in the cooler months and it’s not all about avoiding thigh chafe.

  1. Way more vendor availability!

Are you tired of reaching out to your dream vendors only to be told they don’t have a single Saturday left in March or November? According to industry reports, there are typically 120,000 weddings on average in Australia every year but we’re expecting around 160000 weddings to take place in 2022.

The struggle is real and we get it! Our hearts break a little every time we have to turn someone away who we really vibe with!

Our calendar usually slows down around May and we pick up again in September, that’s potentially 17 Saturdays free just ready for you to pick! No more compromising on the dream vendors you really want.

2. You’ll have the most beautiful, dreamy light.

One of my big loves about winter weddings is that the days are shorter and the light is softer, this means if you’re holding your ceremony at around 2 or 3pm and the sun sets around 5.30, the light will be soft and golden for your ceremony right through to your portraits.

3. You’ll have more time to spend with your guests.

Another point for the beautiful light, we get those beautiful golden portraits at sunset, which means in the summer we have to steal you away from your reception and all of your favourite people at around 7.30-8pm. This usually impacts your reception timeline as we have to work it in around speeches and your other formalities. In winter we’ll get all of your portraits done before your reception. Winner winner.

4. The food tastes better in winter.

You know when you’ve just had the craziest whirlwind of a day ever? A wedding can be like a freaking marathon sometimes with the amount of things you’ve got going on, the last thing you want to do after a marathon when it’s hot af outside is sit down to a hot meal. In winter, because you’ve taken advantage of the beautiful light and created your seamless timeline, you’ll be relaxing by the open fireplace, you’ll be in your grandma’s vintage furs and you’ll be enjoying the chefs signature dish.

5. It’s not going to be 40 degrees.

I really think this one gets overlooked, an Aussie summer day could be 15 degrees or it could be 40 and this isn’t ideal when you’ve planned for it to be warm but it’s freezing so you’re not dressed accordingly, or you haven’t planned for it to be quite THAT warm so your flowers are miserable and your eyeliner just won’t stay put and it’s not because you’re crying. It could flood or the place could be on fire and this is only to going to continue to get worse as we deal with climate change.

I could write an entire post just on this one point, there’s just every reason under the red hot sun to choose a cooler time of year to get hitched but the main one is this: the average winter temperature for Victoria is 7-14 degrees, that’s VASTLY different to summer variations. If you already know it’s going to be cool you can plan accordingly.

6. Your portrait locations won’t be full of people.

This is for you if you’re going somewhere public for photos, we spend most of our weekends shooting in the Grampians and we love winter because we barely see another soul when you go to the best locations. It’s much easier to express your love for each other when you don’t have 50 strangers watching.

7. Wedding fatigue won’t be a thing

If you’re getting married chances are some of your friends are planning weddings too. Some of the couples we’ve worked with have had a string of weddings to attend around the same time as theirs and it can be a whole thing to organise! If you opt for a winter celebration then not only will you probably be the only one in your circle doing it but you can create a vibe entirely different to everyone else you know.

8. Bring on the honeymoon!

It’s winter of 2022, borders are open, flights are back on. You’re itching to go on a holiday and it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere! Can you imagine soaking up the sun in Spain or LA while your friends are all freezing back home? You could literally plan your wedding day around having the best honeymoon ever!

9. Cosy feels, sleeves and texture, baby!

Imagine velvet everything, jewel tones, texture, the works! I love every aspect of winter weddings from the long lace sleeves and the wool suits to throw rugs and velvet lounges around the fire pits. You can create a vibe that just can’t be achieved in the summer.

10. It might rain.

Why are you saying this like it’s a good thing you might ask? It has nothing to do with luck and old wives tales and everything to do with getting the most amazingly dreamy photos you could ever imagine. It feels like the biggest bummer on your wedding day but I promise you when you see what we create you’ll be completely stoked that the weather was less than ideal, check out Amanda and Rhys’s moody winter elopement to see for yourself.
